We went to the Apex African American museum after leaving the CNN Center. Our students had an oportunity to view art and items related to the African American struggle and culture.
We got to this Museum a little late - 5 minutes to closing so we were not given a full tour. Too bad because although this museum was relatively small, it had so much depth and information. I purchased a book entitled "Black Codes" which had all the prohibitive codes imposed on blacks as they tried to progress forward in life.
Our tour guide explained the photo of the man and women above. She wanted us to know why the man was in shackles and the female was not. She explained that the female's shackle was the baby. Back in those times, women slaves were threated by the use of their baby. If they tried to escape their child would be killed. That was too much of a burden to test so they stayed.
There may be a photo later, but what is not showed here is a slave that mailed himself in a box to the North to be with his family. I will have to get that information and perhaps someone took a photo of it.
